“Nadavakattu” is rich in natural light and plenteous air. It’s a single-floored beauty on 11 cents of land in Kozhikode. The owner, Ramkumar, who runs a business in used cars, was very particular about a stylish single-storied house rich in natural elements. He entrusted the work to designer Mukil who did justice to his client’s desires.
The plot is special as it is laced by roads on three sides. The elevation in box structure helped in maximizing all of the available land areas and providing a heightened effect of land space. The flat roof as terrace has been provided with ample facilities for constructing a floor upstairs if need be.
The insides are in open style. It’s a free mix of air and light through the multiple cross-ventilation sources. There’s no need for artificial lights by day, as the rooms are as bright as the light outside. The style inside is minimal and dignified. The veneer on gypsum boards used for false ceiling and the muted lights set in them provide a touch of class to the room. There’s nothing flashy or ostentatious here.
A formal living space and a family living area have been effectively designed. The private space and the custom-made furniture are added highlights.
The pergola glass skylight brightens up the living space. The carvings on the walls of the dining are arresting. A door at the end of the dining room opens out to a small patio which lets in a lot of light and air. The kitchen and dining space are in the open style. A small dining area has been built into the kitchen.
The master bedroom and the guest bedroom have attached bathrooms.
Vitrified tiles in muted shades not only made the floors attractive but helped in cost-cutting too.
The Kadappa and granite used to dress the garden allow the water to seep down. The grass peeping out between the stones makes for a fine green cover.
A small office space has been provided near the sit-out. The compound wall is in total sync with the style and structure of the house. The house looks more stunning by night.
For Ramkumar, his house is a home, in which he is totally at peace after a tough day’s toil.
