Hello Namasthe music review: Top-notch

Director: Jayan K. Nair

Music: Deepankuran and Masala Coffee

Lyrics: Kaithapram and Anil Panachooran

Short albums, comprising a maximum of three songs, are frequent in Malayalam these days. Adi Kapyare Kootamani had only three tracks, so did Two Countries and Paavada. Hello Namasthe trims the number to make it just two.

The two songs are from two composers – Deepankuran, son of Kaithapram Damodaran Namboothiri and the fusion band Masala Coffee. While this is Deepankuran's fourth film as music director, it is the first time that Masala Coffee is associated with a Malayalam film's soundtrack. Listening in.

» Kandukothiche (Singer: Vijay Yesudas)

Vijay Yesudas, the go-to-singer of romantic numbers in Malayalam now, is in full control of this light song, tuned by Deepanakuran. The lyricist, the composer and the singer are very much in their comfort zones and that is palpable in the track. Deepankuran makes it more fascinating with the the guitar-ilathalam mix and the nadaswaram portion in the interludes. Breezy, delightful track.

» Hello Namasthe (Sooraj Santhosh, Varun Sunil)

Masala Coffee has carved out a song encompassing all their unique elements for the title track of Hello Namasthe. We are all ears as the morsing and the strings lead us to a tune that has its foundation in carnatic music. The band's percussionist Varun Sunil makes it funky enough to catch our attention as he sings the opening lines. Lead vocalist Sooraj Santhosh takes over then and does a brilliant job, quite expectedly. It is wonderful to listen to the blend the Masala Coffee has created here collaborating their regular set of instruments – amusing, melodious and highly creative. The interlude featuring bouzouki and esraj is good on the ears. Masala Coffee does everything right with this groovy number. Thumps up to the band for 'Hello Namasthe'.

Verdict

Both the songs of Hello Namasthe succeed in what they intend to do. Deepankuran makes our hearts melt with the lovely 'Kandukothiche'. However, 'Hello Namasthe' title song stands out in the album for the innovative sounds brought in by Masala Coffee.
