The song ‘Manikya Malaraya Poovi’ from the upcoming flick directed by Omar Lulu, Oru Adaar Love has become the latest love anthem of the youth in Kerala.
Forty years ago, when PMA Jabbar penned the beautiful lines of this extremely romantic Mapilapattu, he hardly imagined that it would become such a huge hit four decades later.
Jabbar, who has been working at a super market in Al – Malaz at Riyadh, Saudi Arabia for the last five years, is highly excited at the new found glory of his song.
The song was presented on Dooradarshan twenty nine years ago on an Eid day, and was also one of the tracks in ‘Ezham Bahar’, an audio cassette released in 1992 which featured some of the super hit Mapila songs.
It was the renowned Mapilapattu singer Rafeeq Thalasserry who sang this song for the first time, and was then sung by many other singers down the years. Meanwhile, Jabbar is so jubilant that the young generation is singing his song even four decades after he penned those lines.
Jabbar is not just a lyricist, he is a good singer as well. He has been writing songs since the age of sixteen. He began his career as a lyricist writing songs for kids, to be rendered during cultural events in Madrassas. Jabbar who is reverently addressed as Ustad (teacher) has written more than five hundred songs so far.
He says that Rafeeq had informed him about his song being revisited by Shaan Rahman for the movie. Jabbar is also a known figure now as the remixed version rendered beautifully by Vineeth Sreenivasan has become such a huge hit. He is elated at the overwhelming response of the audience and his family too shares his happiness and excitement.
Jabbar has not yet received any remuneration or recognition for the countless songs he has written so far, but he says that there is no recognition more valuable than the popularity that his song enjoys today.
He is happy that ‘Manikya Malaraya Poovi’ has found a special place in the hearts of millions of Malayalis all over the world.
