The Cologne Musical Arts Club headed by ace musician Johny Chakkupurackal, a Keralite, has made an appeal to confer Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian order in India, on legendary singer Dr. KJ Yesudas.
Ever since Yesudas’ magical voice was heard for the first time, a day in the life of a Malayali music lover seldom passes without listening to the songs of the legendary singer. With more than seventy thousand songs to his credit, Yesudas has rendered songs in almost all Indian languages except Assamese, Konkani and Kashmiri, the club said.
The Cologne Musical Club says that the singer with a divine voice deserves the highest civilian honor as his songs transcend languages and cultures.
Johny Chakkupurackal added that millions of music lovers who enjoy Yesudas’ songs too would share similar sentiments about honoring the legendary singer with Bharat Ratna.
The Cologne Musical Arts Club has already sent a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi requesting him to adorn Yesudas with the prestigious title. The club has appealed to Kerala’s chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan to present the matter before the center as a special request by the state government.
Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian honor in India is given to those eminent personalities who have contributed exceptionally well in the fields of art, literature, science, social service and sports.
In the letter submitted to the prime minister, the club has clearly stated that Yesudas rightly deserves the title as no other Indian musician has been able achieve the incredible fetes in music that the Malayali musician has attained in his career spanning almost 55 years.
Bharat Ratna, instituted in 1954 has been awarded 46 times in the last 63 years. Certain fields have even been conferred with the title for more than ten times. The club in their letter said that none from Kerala has been awarded with a Bharat Ratna so far, though the state has produced many immensely talented personalities in almost all fields who deserves the award. Meanwhile, the countless fans of Yesudas hope that the government would positively consider this request which has been made for the last twenty years.
