Give him any adjective and it won't be enough. We are talking about Kamal Haasan. In the four-decade long multifaceted career, we have seen him as an actor, director, writer, producer and orator. Now, the  beloved 'Ulakanayakan' is donning a new hat - that of a soon-to-be full time politician.

“I am not a star anymore, I am the lamp in your house” is how Kamal Haasan opened the conversation and we are quickly reminded how the man always had a way with his words.

While Onmanorama was prepared to meet a star-politician, we met a simple man in a plain kurta keenly answering the questions on his upcoming movie 'Vishwaroopam 2', slated to hit the screens on August 10, 2018. Excerpts:

The second innings

Vishwaroopam 2 is the sequel to the 2013 film but Kamal reveals it was not planned as such.

“For us, we have made only one film. When the script for Vishwaroopam was done years ago, we landed in a quandary unable to fit all we wanted to into the typical time frame of a movie. But we were also not ready to trim the content or alter the script.

We wanted the research behind the movie to reach the audience in full power and so we made the film in two parts.

The second part is in continuation to the first and in fact, Vishwaroopam 2 will be both a prequel and sequel”, he said.

Just that the second part will focus more on relationships than the first, he added.

Films reflect politics

Kamal Haasan launched his political party Makkal Needhi Maiam in February this year and when asked if his movie will depict his political stand, he said,

“Most of my films were political, right from Hey Ram. And this one, Vishwaroopam, talks about patriotism. And patriotism will vary for each individual depending upon how you define it.”

Talking about his decision to venture into politics, Kamal Haasan says, “I just don't want to die as a mere actor. I want to serve and want to die serving people.”

High actions and stunts

While the movie will see high-octane action sequences, the actor shared how he managed to pull the scenes without any body doubles.

“It was a real challenge. More than me, I was scared for the female stars doing action scenes. Surprisingly, the ladies amused me. Pooja Kumar was a certified diver. Andrea just swiftly managed all the stunts. But when you compare the action sequences with that of Hollywood, I feel they are more trained unlike us,” he said.

Dance training

The first part of Vishwaroopam saw Kamal Haasan dancing under the special training of Pandit Birju Maharaj. Sharing his experience he said, “It was a dream come true. Dancing was something I was always passionate about but could never master. There will be only a bit of it in this movie as we couldn't afford a repetition. Yet, I was happy about developing the idea of a dance sequence that got applauds in the first part”.

Admiring M-town

“The whole country is watching the kind of films that Malayalam is making. In fact, everyone is looking forward to Malayalam movies. Even the audience here is so credible and genuine that I personally want everyone to watch the movie and keep the flag flying”, he concluded before leaving us flashing a thumbs-up and that charming smile.
