When popular RJ Mathukutty came on TV, Keralites accepted him more, for his ability to make their evenings livelier. He is the host of cooking reality show 'Dhe Chef.' He shares some of his experiences:
How do you feel as VJ Mathukutty from being RJ Mathukutty?
Earlier, people used to recognise me by my voice. Now, people recognise me when they see me. That is the main difference. Now I can't travel more in the open because people recognise me. Earlier I was free to do whatever I wanted (laughs).
An interesting incident after becoming VJ
Wherever I go, I find people around me and therefore I do not feel bored. I am happy that even kids recognise me on the roads. As RJ I could not reach out to women and kids much and now I can, after 'Dhe Chef' happened.
How did you start working for the media?
I went for studying hotel management after Plus Two and I joined Taj Residency after my course. I left after one month, following a tiff with the chef. Then I joined Aluva UC college for BA Malayalam. In my class I was amidst a lot of girls and some nerds. Only a few boys amongst us were active. That exposure instilled character in me. Then I completed my journalism and after a brief stint in a newspaper, became an RJ.
Are you focussing on visual media?
I resigned from radio because I was entrusted with writing dialogues for a film called You Too Brutus' After that a few more films followed. Since I did not have time, I decided to do only a weekend show. Then I got a call from 'Dhe Chef.' My main focus now is on writing. All others are bonuses.
How did people react to ‘De Chef’?
People who never used to offer even water to me are now ready to give me chicken Biriyani. After feeding me, they would also ask about the quality of the food and I cannot budge without giving an opinion. Another advantage is that I met a lot of people who know how to cook well. If I go to functions now, the head of catering makes it a point to meet me. I have a big collection of visiting cards of catering service providers.
About the Arabian Safari experiences
I could visit a lot of posh localities in Dubai. I also saw how people live in deplorable conditions. Two dreams of mine-to sit alone in the desert during full moon and Dune Bashing- both happened on the trip.
What is the story about the full moon?
I had wanted to sit in a desert during a full moon night. Perhaps I was inspired by the book, 'Aadu Jeevitham.' I had planned to accomplish the dream at Thar Desert. That is when the Arabian Safari as part of ‘Dhe Chef’ happened. After the desert camp started, I saw that it was full moon. After shooting ended late night, I walked alone on the desert for some time. The sand is blue at night. I sat on the sand looking at the moon and sat still for a long time. All my tiredness vanished in 30 minutes.
Do you know cooking?
I can make black tea.
Are you sensitive?
I believe that life should be very romantic. There is a big difference when we approach something seriously or with love. Then why can't we approach things with love always?
