When actor Vinayakan received the best actor title from fellow actor Jayasurya at the CPC cine awards 2016 ceremony at a hotel in Kochi, the actor did not hide his joy. He was grinning wide, like a little kid, and took the trophy from Jayasurya.
The manner in which each award winners took their trophies Sunday told the crowd that the recognition by Cinema Paradiso Club, the Facebook group of cinema lovers, is very special to them.
On the stage, when Vinayakan was handed over the microphone to talk, as usual, he did not say much. “I am reminded of that moment when I first faced the camera in 1994. It took me all these years to reach here. Thank you,” he said as the audience gave a standing ovation to the humble actor.
Then, Vinayakan showed the audience how delighted and emotional he was winning the best actor title. With the award in his right hand, he repeatedly pumped his fist in the air as loud cheer filled the hall.
This is the first time that Vinayakan is winning the best actor title. He won the top honor for his gritty performance as Ganga in Rajeev Ravi's 2016 directorial Kammatipaadam.
Veteran actor Indrans was given a special honorary award for his wholesome contribution to cinema. And, he too said, “It has been over 30 years since I came into the industry. But, this is the first time that I am getting such a top honor.”
Rajisha Vijayan, who won the best actress award (Anuraga Karikkin Vellam) along with Sai Pallavi (Kali), became emotional as she spoke. Sai Pallavi could not make it to the event.
Dileesh Pothan (best director), Shyam Pushkaran (best script writer), Manikandan Achari (best supporting actor), Rohini (best supporting actress), Bijibal (best music director) and Shyju Khalid (best cameraman) also received their awards at the event.
Aashiq Abu who produced Maheshinte Prathikaram, received the best film award along with his team.
Actors Jayasurya, Saiju Kurup, Vijay Babu, Shalin Soya, Baby Meenakshi, directors Sunil Ibrahim and Basil Joseph were special guests at the event.
Along with the CPC team, director Midhun Manuel Thomas, an active member of the group, made sure that everything went smooth.
The award winners were selected in a two-step process. The members of Cinema Paradiso Club were allowed to vote on Facebook in each category and then a 12-member jury picked the winners from the entries who got the most number of votes.
One thing is for sure, the CPC cine awards has scripted a new chapter in the history of Malayalam cinema. Actor Jayasurya put it the right words – 'this is the most honest film awards'. The way Vinayakan kept that award close to his heart when he sat down after receiving the honor is a testimony to it.
