Let's face it- it's not that easy to pull-off a science-fiction movie. This is because, at the end of the day, movies happen in a fictional world after all. Sci-fi movies sell easily because they are enjoyed by people of all ages. They play with our imaginative abilities and makes us think what if everything shown in the cinema happens in the real world. There are only a handful of Hollywood films that could be classified as exceptional sci-fi movies. There are a few maestro film-makers of the sort of Christopher Nolan and Ridley Scott who has made great sci-fi films. Here's a list of five prime sci-fi movies made in the 21st century.

Source Code(2011)

The film is directed by Duncan Jones, who first made 'Moon'. 'Source Code' is such a fascinating film for sci-fi lovers and it leaves one more than baffled at the end. The movie stars Jake Gyllenhaal who plays Colter Stevens, a pilot and a member of a secret initiative by the government. He is chosen to relive the final moments of another man's life, who has died in a train explosion. The quest asks him to find out the whereabouts of the bomber but things take a turn when the character starts reflecting on himself with lesser availability of time and a lot on the plate.

Predestination(2014)

Predestination is nothing you've seen before – it's the mother of all time travel movies. The film stars Ethan Hawk as a 'temporal agent' who revolves in the time frame from 1945 to 1993 in hunt of the fizzle bomber. The film is a collection of paradoxes from the very start and questions the logic of time-travels and the time-travel movies hitherto made. You need to pay close attention to each and every aspect of the film right from the opening scene which entwines time-loop of 3 generations.

Interstellar(2014)

Interstellar is a visual masterpiece. The film is set sometime in the future when life on Earth times out and there is a need to find life in some other planet. The film stars Matthew McConaughey as Lee Cooper, who plays the pilot to this mission. Interstellar is an emotional father-daughter story which uses a lot of science, time travel, black holes and the fifth dimensions as apparatus to explain itself. The film asks for multiple viewings to be understood completely.

Her(2013)

'Her' is the most creative of all these films on the list perhaps. It tells the story of a man who falls in love with Artificial Intelligence. Spike Jones has directed this film and his vision is spell-bound. It takes the viewer to the not-so-far future where human beings and AI could develop an intimacy between them.' Her' is crafted amazingly and we'd still need a lot of time and contemplation to totally realize and digest the idea the director is trying to convey through this film.

Eternal Sunshine of Spotless Mind(2003)

No list is complete without this movie. Though the film appears to be a romantic melodrama on the surface, in the core it's a sci-fi movie which deals with the concept of memory-erasing. The film stars Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet. Things take a turn when Clementine(Kate Winslet) decides to delete Joel(Jim Carrey) out of her memory. He gets back at her by erasing her and this is where the film really really starts off. Most of the sequences are set in Joel's head with memories of Clementine popping up at random points. The plot is a bit difficult to follow because of this reason. To totally get the film, it requires multiple viewings and it's a wonderful feeling when you've finally fully understood the film.
