'Peranbu' director Ram on facing Mammootty's anger and care during the shoot

The movie 'Peranbu' which hit screens on February 1 is running successfully in theatres. Mammootty is getting rave reviews for his performance in the emotional drama directed by Ram.

In a recent interview with 'Tamil Cinema Review', director Ram revealed when he had to face Mammootty anger and even experience his care during 'Peranbu' shooting. Ram also shared how scared he was about asking a superstar like Mammootty to travel to the location at a remote place to where the caravan could not reach easily.

“Mammootty had agreed for the role and was ready but I was weary about the location where we were to shoot. The location was about two-and-a-half hours away from Kodaikanal. And it was quite a tough job to reach the place for the roads were rugged and his caravan could barely reach there with ease,” said Ram.

On the first day of the shoot, Mammootty, known for his blunt remarks, asked Ram, why he should take such hardships at this juncture in his career spanning 4 decades. Without hiding his displeasure, Mammootty asked Ram how old he is in the industry and Ram replied “4 years sir.” To this Mammootty asked “do you know how long have I been here. It is your time to work hard but why should I."

This interaction cast a shadow of doubt about how things will develop. “I felt Mammootty has started hating me and was doubtful if he would continue acting.”

However, once the shoot started and Mammootty was in the character, he was a totally different person.

Ram also mentioned another instance when Mammootty asked him to accompany him to avoid the inconvenience at the remote site. “My assistants and I were staying on the shooting site itself and Mammootty used to travel back to hotel after shoot. One morning he came to me and said that I too should join him in the hotel. He stated that he was feeling guilty for making me sleep on sets while he himself was resting at a good place. I realised only an actor like him could be worried about the well being of his team.”

“One day, I went to him and told that we were shooting the sunrise the next day, which required him to be at the location by 5.45am. To reach the location at time, it would require him to start as early as 3.30am but he surprised all of us by reaching at the location by 5:30 am. That proved that Mammootty was not just a mere star but a legend himself,” Ram recalled.

Ram further revealed that he admired Mollywood directors including Bharathan and Lohithadas and was a fan of the movie 'Thaniyavarthanam'. “After watching that movie while I was studying filmmmaking, I had decided that one day I will cast him (Mammootty) in my film.”

Ram explained that only when he came to Lulu Mall, Kochi, for the premier show of 'Peranbu' in Kerala that he realised about Mammootty's huge fan base. “So many directors came for the show, spoke about the movie and about him, I felt I had directed one big star for my lifetime,” he added.

'Peranbu' was also screened at Shanghai International Film Festival and received a standing ovation from the audience in Tokyo.
