The suicide of film producer Ashok Kumar, the cousin of director Sasikumar, has split the Tamil film industry.

As the film fraternity is coming to terms with the shocking step taken by the 43 year old Kumar, many in the industry has come down heavily on financier Anbu Chezhiyan, who is named in Ashok Kumar's alleged suicide note as responsible for his drastic action.

Actor Vishal, president of the Tamil Nadu Producers' Council, has requested the police investigating the case to consider it as a case of murder. Shamna Kasim, the Malayalam actor Shamna Kasim tweeted that Anbu Chezhiyan deserves the “biggest punishment” for allegedly pushing Ashok Kumar to suicide.

But a few prominent personalities from the industry have come out in Anbu Chezhiyan’s support. Actor Devayani, in a press conference, voiced her support for the financier and denied the allegations that Anbu Chezhiyan had harassed her and her husband director Rajakumaran in the past when they borrowed money for a movie project Kadhalanpudan. They have paid back the money and was never once badly treated or pressurized by the financier.

Several others like producers Kalaippuli S Thanu and Elred Kumar, director-producers C Sundar, Vetrimaaran, Manobala, and actor-producer Vijay Antony have voiced a similar opinion about Anbu Chezhiyan.

The opinions expressed here do not reflect those of Malayala Manorama. Legal action under the IT Act will be taken against those making derogatory and obscene statements.
