Malayalam stars Manju Warrier and Nivin Pauly received the Best Actor awards at the second edition of North American Film Awards (NAFA) 2017 held at Bronx Lehman College in New York Saturday.
Earlier, there were speculations that Manju would not be attending the award show as she was reportedly asked by the special investigation team (SIT) probing the actress attack case to avoid a foreign trip.
Dressed in a red-white polka saree, Manju shared the stage with Nivin Pauly and dedicated her award to late director Rajesh Pillai. After receiving the award, she said, “I am really thankful for the immense support I have been receiving from you people. I have great respect for all the American Malayalis, who have crossed borders to set up a life in a new continent.’’
“Today, I have received this award for two of my movies - Vettah and Karinkunnam 6s. I remember all the artists and people involved with these projects. I dedicate this award to our beloved late Rajesh Pillai (Vettah director).’’
“I never thought I will reach here today for the show as there were too many stress and pressure around me. Moreover, I have been shooting for Aami, but the producer and director of the movie were kind enough to let me travel all the way to here and take a break from the shooting schedule”, said Manju.
According to reports, Manju could be quizzed by the Kerala police, after her former husband and actor Dileep was arrested on July 10 for plotting the attack on the young actress.
The actress, who has worked in Tamil and Telugu film industries, was waylaid and harassed in a moving car in Kochi on February 17.
