Kalpetta: The The 'vithu pena' (pen made of seeds) gifted to customers by a cooperative bank here serves multiple purposes – earns goodwill, provides support to a number of physically challenged people and helps spread the greenery of the state.
Made of paper, the pen, when discarded after use, grows into a plant as the seed kept in it sprouts. The pen, presented by Kalpetta Service Cooperative Bank secretary M Vasanthy and staff, is made by Palakkad-based Handicrops, which is engaged in providing a livelihood for the physically challenged . The pen is the main product of Handicrops, which also makes a wide variety of items ranging from umbrella to LED bulbs.
Kalpetta Service Cooperative Bank has been engaged in numerous community support initiatives. It has donated a scanning machine costing Rs 20 lakh to Kainatty general hospital and organizes weekly fairs on Sunday to provide farmers a platform to sell their produce. Now, considering the benefits it would bring to several people in the locality, the director board of the bank has plans to start a unit of Handicrops in Wayanad, said bank president T Suresh Chandran.
