Mulankunnathukav, Thrissur: The year that will be born this midnight belongs to this baby. Just six months in her mother's womb, she was delivered in a C-section even as the mother was undergoing a brain surgery. The mother died, but the baby, weighing just 750 grams then, survived.
Doctors and nurses at the pediatric department of Thrissur Medical College took charge of her, guarding her life, for 75 days. She is due to be handed over to her father Shibu this evening to begin her new life with her family.
Shibu, from Erumapetti, had reached the hospital on October 22 with his wife Dhanya after she collapsed in an epileptic seizure. She was six months into her pregnancy and had suffered severe bleeding in the brain.
The condition held out terrible risk: not only the mother, but also the baby in her womb who could die of lack of oxygen.
The gynec and the neuro surgery departments took up the challenge of conducting two surgeries on the mother at the same time. One to stop the bleeding in her brain and the other to take out the baby.
Dhanya battled for life for four days in the ICU before she passed away. A team of doctors at the pediatric department led by professor Dr. Parvathi Menon, Dr. Febi and Dr.Shefiq took care of the baby day and night for 75 days and is today happy she is being handed over to her father in good health.
Dr. KK Purushothaman, head of department-pediatrics, said everyone in the gynec, neuro surgery and pediatric departments share the credit for this New Year baby, because they all worked with utmost dedication, coordinating with utmost precision.
