200 instead of 28: The bursting figure of overcrowded Palakkad jail

Palakkad: The Palakkad special sub-jail is almost ready to burst at seams with the number of inmates crossing 200. The jail, located at Fort, Palakkad, can originally house only 28 inmates.

The prisoners are almost choking in the congested prison cells that do not even have breathing space. The security conditions at the jail with such a large number of inmates were also not adequate. While the original capacity of the jail allowed only 24 male and 4 female inmates, there were 186 male and 15 female inmates. The small cells house up to 10 inmates while 20 are packed into the larger cells. Though the inmates had raised their voices against the inhuman treatment, the staff was also in a helpless situation.

The staff was functioning under extreme shortage of personnel with their number being much lower than that of the inmates, which was in turn leading to insecurity and fear among the personnel.

Though the construction of a new prison has been completed in Malampuzha, it's yet to be inaugurated. The prison has also not obtained the building number from the panchayath, following some technical hitches. Neither are there any attempts to create new vacancies for the staff.
