Walayar: Two persons, including a woman, were arrested for looting travellers on the national highway and trains. They were part of a gang which targeted mainly hawala operators and gold traders travelling on highways and trains.

The gang members appeared in the attire of police and robbed their victims after taking them in ‘custody’ and severely thrashing them.

The gang had stolen around Rs 15 crore and 30 kg of gold during the last two-and-a-half years, according to the police.

The arrested duo were identified as Silgy (28) of Mankody in Thrissur and Jose (45) of Arimbur, Thrissur.

Silgy is the friend of Vipin, who was earlier arrested in the case. The total arrests in the case have now reached seven. Those arrested in the case earlier were remanded.

According to the police, it was Sligy, who worked at a chit firm, who collected details of the potential targets. Later, Vipin, a resident of Kanjirathingal, Veluthoor, and Sigy made plans to rob these people.

After Vipin’s arrest, Silgy and Jose were preparing to flee abroad when they were nabbed by a special police team from Thrissur. The arrests were made by a team led by Walayar SI S Anshad.
