Alathur, Palakkad: A 53-year-old man, whose right arm was amputated after a train accident 22 years ago, cuts 500 kg of firewood everyday for a living. Govindan Kutty, a resident of Nariyamparambu, Kattusseri, is a living testimony of how a strong mind can overcome physical shortcoming.
The former shotput champion cuts wood with his left hand throughout the day.
Kutty was the top winner for 16 years, from 1999 to 2015, at the district sports festival staged on the World Day for the differently-abled. He called it quits in 2015.
Kutty lost his arm in a train accident in Tirupur in 1996. He underwent treatment at a private hospital in Thrissur for nearly two months, but doctors finally told him there was no option but amputation. “I was disheartened,” Kutty recalls. “The doctor's advice could not calm my mind.”
Kutty has risen from his tragedy. “I conquered my mind,” he says. And he started his work as a firewood cutter. He lives alone in his house on a 3-cent land. He also used to find time for shotput practice when he used to contest.
