Ponnani: A patient was injured Wednesday as the ceiling of the Mother & Child Hospital here inaugurated by the chief minister 19 days ago crashed down.

The ceiling crashed down in front of the pharmacy in the hospital around noon on Wednesday. The injured patient was standing in the queue in front of the pharmacy. Others in the queue managed to run away, averting more casualties.

Medical College, Mancheri: The crack that appeared some five years ago on the wall of the New Block of the Casualty in Medical College Hospital Mancheri is getting larger day by day, compromising the safety level of the building. The five storey building also has dangerous cracks running throughout its height on the backside. Though the Engineering department had conducted primary enquiries, no action was taken.

The crashing of the hospital ceiling, immediately after the inauguration held with much pomp, has given rise to widespread protests. The building was constructed by the Public Works Department (PWD). Both Congress and IUML have come out with the accusation that the damage was a result of the irregularities in construction and the corruption.

Homeo Hospital, Kondotty: The building in Kondotty town which houses the Ayush Primary Health Centre, Homeo Dispensary and public reading room has been in an unsafe condition for years. The ageing concrete walls have started crumbling. Hundreds of people arrive every day in this building for various purposes.

Speaker P.Sreeramakrishnan, who represents the Assembly constituency, said that explanation will be sought from the concerned officials.

Pananmbra Community Hall: Thenjippalam Panchayath office still functions out of this dilapidated building that belongs to the Panchayath. The building is in a dangerous condition with cracked walls, broken ceilings and banyan saplings growing out of cracks. The rainy season poses the additional risk of electrocution due to water seeping into the walls.

Ponnani Municipal chairman C P Muhammed Kunji said that negligence was cause of the mishap and that the contractors had committed unpardonable lapse. He added that explanations have been sought from the concerned officials.

Bus Stand Complex, Nilambur: The old bus stand complex of Nilambur has become a nightmare for the travelers, with concrete panels getting ripped off the dilapidated ceiling. Barely one month ago, a woman was injured when concrete blocks fell on her head as she was walking past the bus stand. The other day, another passenger had a narrow escape as more concrete blocks came crashing down.

Santo Sebastian, assistant engineer, PWD – Buildings, said that the mishap was caused by the ceiling sheets bending due to extreme heat. The PWD has sought explanation from the contractors, and repair work will be carried out immediately.
