Kaduthuruthy: Private buses are notorious for reckless speed and discourteous crew. A recent incident reported from this town in Kottayam district underlines this fact.
The negligence of the bus crew has been blamed after a 57-year-old woman lost her left leg in a shocking accident at Maduraveli, near Kaduthuruthy.
The bus reportedly ran over the left leg of the woman, Pennamma, as she fell under it while boarding. The badly damaged limb had to be amputated after she was rushed to the Caritas Hospital at Thellakom, near Kottayam town.
Doctors there had said that the mangled leg was beyond repair.
Pennamma is the wife of K Thomas of Kottamurikkal House at Peroor. The accident happened as Pennamma and her sister Ivy were boarding the ‘Jaseena’ bus plying on the Ayamkudi-Pala route.
Ivy first boarded the bus through the front door and as Pennamma was about to step on the conductor gave the double bell, signalling to the driver to start the vehicle. As the bus moved before she could board it fully, Pennamma lost her balance and fell under the vehicle. In no time, the rear tyre ran over her left leg. Passengers on board raised an alarm and stopped the bus.
Pennamma’s relatives claimed the bus continued its trip after the mishap.
Pennamma and Ivy were returning home after visiting a relative.
