Bid to light up woman with kerosene fails

Kollam: A woman who has filed for divorce has alleged that her husband and his relatives tried to light her on fire by pouring kerosene inside a car. A youth and his relatives from Thakkala, Kanyakumari, are under police custody in the case.

The incident took place in front of a private hospital on Kadappakkada-Ashramam Road at 3pm on Tuesday. The woman ran screaming out of a car drenched in kerosene. Autorickshaw drivers who saw this stopped the car and the passengers in it until police arrived.

She had filed for a divorce and was returning with relatives from a bank after a court ordered transfer of money from husband’s account. The police took the husband in custody.

According to the police version, the woman and her relatives had reached the bank for the transaction. After their car broke down, they had insisted that the husband and his family take her in his car.
