No gain, only pain for five women traffic wardens

Kollam: Five women traffic wardens here are braving the sun, dust and speeding vehicles without any gain for them. Associated with the the Kundara police station near here, they have not been paid salary for the last two months for the agonising job.

The traffic wardens are paid a monthly salary of Rs 6,000, Rs 200 per day, when the home guards are paid about Rs 750 daily for the same task.

The police personnel, who have the responsibility to monitor the work of the traffic wardens, don't enquire whether the latter got the salary or not. The traffic wardens are deployed, with the help of sponsors, in major cities to ease the work pressure of police force who draw salary from the government exchequer.

The five women traffic personnel are in a fix as the authorities concerned have so far failed to mobilise money from the sponsors to pay them salary. The wardens have to buy their uniforms, and there has been no pay hike for the past 10 years.

Ironically, these unpaid women personnel work in an area represented by a woman minister.
