Chavara (Kollam): The father of a Sabarimala Karma Samithi activist was found hanging within hours of the latter’s surrender to police in a case relating to violence during a protest march. Mohanan Pillai, 65, was found hanging in his house on Thursday.

Frequent police visits at home and heartbreak from son’s surrender led to the suicide, alleged Pillai’s relatives and BJP members.

Pillai’s son Manoj Kumar, a Yuva Morcha activist, was booked for attacking one Anees of Panmana Nettiyad at Kannankulangara Junction on January 2.

Manoj and friend Devanand surrendered to the police around Thursday noon after they came looking for him at his house, Manesh Bhavan.

Pillai's wife saw him hanging around 4:30pm. He could not be revived despite being rushed to Karunagappally Taluk Hospital.

Pillai was the president of BJP’s booth 69 at Padinjattakkara. He is survived by wife Anandavalli and another son Manesh Kumar.

The police have registered a case of unnatural death. The body is kept in the taluk hospital mortuary.
