Payyannur: The astronomical observatory at Vellur near here in Kannur district is gearing up to observe the annual solar eclipse on December 26.

The eclipse will start at 8.04 am with the ‘ring of fire’ appearing at 9 am.

The eclipse is scheduled to end at 11 am and be fully visible for the stargazers of Kannur, Kasaragod and Wayanad districts.

The annular solar eclipse occurs when the Moon glides between the Earth and the Sun. During this magical moment, the Sun will appear as a ring surrounding the Moon.

Many overseas astronomy buffs and experts would be reaching the observatory, named Astro, to study the spectacular phenomenon, said center administrators Gangadharan Vellur, Pavur Narayanan and R Muraleedharan.

A month-long study programme and a training camp were launched the other day. It will be inaugurated by Payyannur municipal chairman Sasi Vattakkovval.

Retired Isro scientists will take classes on modern planetary studies, production and use of solar protective spectacles, evolution of stars; moon and annular solar eclipse.

The experts will also touch on software relating to stargazing and nuances of telescope.
