Kochi: A youth was hacked to death by a three-member gang at Athani, near Nedumbassery, in Kerala's Ernakulam district on Sunday. The deceased has been identified as Binoy, 34, a native of Thuruthissery near the Nedumbassery airport.

The incident happened around 8 pm on Sunday in front of a Bevco liquor outlet at the Athani Junction while local people remained mute spectators.

A CCTV footage which came out on Monday shows the gruesome murder of the youth.

According to the police, the gang, which came in a car, hacked Binoy multiple times and mutilated his face with the weapon.

Police suspect the murder as a fallout of gang war as the victim was an accused in several criminal cases.

"We have identified the culprits and a search is on," Superintendent of Police, Ernakulam Rural, P K Karthik said.

Binoy's body has been shifted to Kalamassery Medical College hospital and a post-mortem will be held on Monday.
