Kochi: This is what you call losing everything in the blink of an eye!

An elderly woman who came to see an ophthalmologist had to keep her eyes closed for some time after she was administered eye drops.

By the time she opened her eyes, her one-and-a-half sovereign gold chain was missing. The 'daylight' robbery happened at Ernakulam general hospital.

Dayani Raghu, 76, from Ochanthuruth in Vypin, had come to see the doctor along with her sister. The doctor told to keep her eyes shut after he administered her the eye drops.

She was sitting among other patients in OP block on the first floor. In between, her sister went to the washroom and it is believed that the robbery took pace then. When she opened her eyes, the gold chain was missing. The thief was so deft in his work that the woman had no clue if the chain was cut or removed by unhooking it.

It is suspected that someone, who sat near her in the guise of a patient, stole the chain. Though the CCTV camera footage of the hospital was checked, there was no visuals of the place where the theft happened.

The gold chain was gifted to her a few months ago by her son Ajayan Ochanthuruth, a journalist. The central police have started an inquiry.

Earlier too, there were reports of robbery at the general hospital. A mobile phone that was kept for charging was stolen from the gynecology ward in broad daylight. Though the theft was caught on CCTV camera, the culprit is yet to be arrested.

In another case, a gang, who had come to the hospital along with an injured man, stole money from the X-ray unit. They were identified using the CCTV footage.
