Edathua: The share of senior citizens in Kerala's population is high owing to longevity. On the flip side, old people face loneliness as the younger generation live elsewhere, mostly outside the state.
Thresiamma, 92, would have been all alone this Onam as her children and relatives are abroad. But the police personnel of Janamaitri station here had other ideas. They made Thresiamma’s day by having a sumptuous traditional ‘sadya’ with her on Onam day.
The police found that Thresiamma, who has seven children, was living alone at Koilmukku during patrolling that focused on houses of elderly people. That is when principal SI Sesil Christian Raj decided to have lunch with Thresiamma on Onam day instead of with his family.
Dishes were brought from each police officer’s house and an Onam gift was also given to her. She is not in a physical condition even to contact the immediate neighbours, and it was found that many CCTV cameras were installed around her house.
After this incident, SI said that it came to light that several children started to visit their parents who were living alone.
Gopan, Shylesh Kumar, Binu and Gargi, all police personnel, and home guard Francis accompanied the SI while visiting the house of Thresiamma.
Koilmukku is in Edathua in Kerala's Alappuzha district.
