Haripad: Sending out a strong green message, the local corporation here is starting a unit to manufacture cloth bags in a bid to root out the menace of plastic bags. The manufacturing unit with an outlay of Rs 7 lakh would come up at the Dhanapadi market here in Alappuzha district. An old building, which would house the unit, has been spruced up and machinery, including 18 state-of-the-art sewing and cloth cutting machines, worth Rs 5 lakh has been installed.
Sewing training has been imparted to 20 women, and Rs 2 lakh would be earmarked to buy cloths and threads for the unit. The cloth bags manufactured at the unit would be supplied to local merchants, and the authorities concerned are planning to open more such units if the demand for cloth bags is encouraging.
The cloth bags are supplied at a fixed rate and excess money after meeting the production cost would be given to the unit members. The aim of the project is to say no to plastic bags and provide employment opportunities to women. Plans are anvil to manufacture paper bags too. A plastic waste management plant was also getting ready to be inaugurated, said the corporation officials.
