Spare clothes donated for flood-hit to be auctioned

Chengannur: People are making a beeline to collect donated clothes that were not distributed to the flood-hit. The revenue department said that there were no takers initially for the used clothes provided by voluntary organisations.

On Friday, several people turned up to collect the clothes. Most of the clothes were meant for women and children. The remaining clothes will be auctioned, said the revenue department.

"The district collector has directed to hold the auction of unusable clothes and provide the proceeds to the Chief Minister's Disaster Relief Fund. We plan to remove the clothes today," said K B Sasi, tahsildar.

The tahsildar had made it clear that the clothes were not brought by the revenue department and that it had not stored them during or after the floods at the auditorium or its premises.

Onmanorama had reported that the clothes were getting damaged since they were not distributed for the past four-and-a-half months. The cloth boxes are lying unopened at Girideepam auditorium premises.
