Mannar: Their desolate eyes speak volumes of the distress they are in. It has been more than four months since the flood waters had receded, but an elderly couple, who lost their home in the August deluge, is still living in a relief camp at Peringilipuram near here in Alappuzha district.

Prabhakaran, 68, and his wife Padmakshi, 63, residents of Budhanur village, lost their home in the surging waters in August, and are staying alone at the panchayat community hall.

The childless couple was rescued by local people and volunteers during the floods and brought to the panchayat community hall. Prabhakaran can’t go for any job as there is no one to take care of his wife, who is is partially paralysed.

Prabhakaran is not on the government list of those who lost their homes during the flood as he didn’t own any property. He was staying at his ancestral home for which his siblings too had ownership rights. Now, they have given consent to the panchayat to grant home to the couple, and both are keeping their fingers crossed.
