Disability, ailment no deterrent to this Good Samaritan

Ambalapuzha: R Rajesh is a true fighter. He was born with physical disabilities and is suffering from blood cancer. However, he never let his disabilities and ailments stop him from dedicating his life to the service of the needy and the distressed.

The 34-year-old, a native of Keerikadu near Kayamkulam, was in the forefront of the post-flood relief activities in his neighbourhood when another tragedy struck in the form of an accident. Rajesh and his friend were on their way to supply food packets to a relief camp in their area when the motorcycle they were travelling on collided with another bike at Neerkunnam on the national highway. Rajesh, who was riding pillion, sustained multiple fractures on his leg and injuries to his face in the accident which took place on August 25.

Rajesh, who is the district co-ordinator of a volunteer group, had developed post-polio syndrome (PPS) in 2012. It was only nine months since he was able to walk without assistance. He was diagnosed with blood cancer while undergoing treatment for PPS at the Alappuzha Medical College Hospital.

Rajesh, who was discharged from hospital on Sunday, has started taking cancer treatment drugs, but he does not want to stop his philanthropic activities. He is also dependent on daily insulin doses of 40 units.

Rajesh, whose family comprises wife and two children, ekes out a living by writing poetry and penning lyrics for musical albums. He has made it a habit to set aside a percentage of his income for charity.
