Is it only in schools, colleges and workplaces that one gets ragged? Apparently not, going by a video, that has been doing rounds on the net.
A starry-eyed, coy young bride steps into her husband’s house in all her finery. But she’s not quite ready for the “grinding” welcome that awaits her.
She is taken not to her bridal chamber, but to a grinding stone, where a plate full of grated coconut, red chilies and shallots await her. “Grind it to perfection … like your mother-in-law would”, yell a crowd of wedding day revelers, as the girl obliges.
They egg her on, with crass comments flying fast and thick, while her husband joins in, baring his teeth in glee. A gaggle of bejeweled women crowding around offers neither support nor sympathy, as the girl struggles to finish her chore.
Though the bride grins and goes with it, the distress on her face is all too palpable.
More distressing for viewers is the groom’s lusty cheer and his apparent lack of sensitivity.
The picture could well have been a classic scene from one of our Malayalam sitcoms where a blood-sucking mama-in-law lies in wait to pounce on her unsuspecting daughter-in-law.
But this was no serial, but a celebration which went awry. Or it could have been a crude wedding-day custom of that particular place where only the bride gets to be ragged.
Or yet, some “fun” at someone else’s expense, of course.
Onmanorama has not independently verified the authenticity of the video and where the incident took place.
