Gracamma was a head turner when she rode a Chetak scooter in the streets of Kollam in the early 1990s. Her friends were still riding pillion with their husbands. Lieutenant colonel K.K. John, however, did not think twice before letting his wife ride his favorite scooter.
Gracamma, a school teacher, has been riding her passion since she obtained a two-wheeler driving license in 1992. She always rode the Chetak to the Mukhathala school where she worked then. She was later transferred to the higher secondary school but the scooter never left her.
In 2012, the teacher bought a Pulsar. She was actually appropriating the motorbike bought by her son, a biomedical engineer in Chennai.
The teacher was transferred to Chendamangalam by then. She would ride the motorbike to Chendamangalam from their new house at Vyttila in Kochi. John was not amused. Faced with reports of recurring accidents on the treacherous roads of the big city, he did not want his wife to ride a motorbike for 60 kilometers every day. He sent the motorbike to his son in Chennai.
The teacher was not grounded though. She bought a 'Classic 500 Bullet' in 2015. John was relieved too. Now, Gracamma is back in Kollam as the higher secondary division coordinator of IT@School and sure enough, she still rides her bullet to work, leaving the car at home.
