Dental care Some simple tips can help maintain dental hygiene easily. Photo: Getty Images

Oral health is perhaps the most neglected part of health care regime. Some simple tips can help maintain dental hygiene easily. Look for fluoride in toothpaste, limit acidic drinks and get your teeth cleaned every six months to keep teeth strong and healthy.

Saurabh Gupta, prosthodontist and dental surgeon at SouthEx Dental, New Delhi, and Unnati Gupta, nobel fellow and senior implantologist, lists down some basic rules for dental hygiene.

» Use dental floss or inter dental brushes: Use a slow and gentle up and down motion to floss once a day - preferably at night.

» Look for fluoride in toothpaste: Always use a toothpaste which contains fluoride as it helps to harden tooth enamel and reduces the risk of cavities.

» Reduce the intake of soft drinks, sugary food, cordials and packaged fruit juices. One should avoid over indulgence in sweet foods like candies and chocolates.

» Get your teeth cleaned (scaling) every six months to one year as advised by the dentist to keep gums healthy and strong. This will also keep cavity formation at bay.

» Those with dental implants should consult the dentist every year to maintain hygiene

» Do not use toothpaste for cleaning removable dentures. Use a soft toothbrush to clean them under running water. Always remove dentures from the mouth and use a mild soap for cleaning it.
