The word ‘Karkidakam,’ is bound to remind you of those medicinal baths with oils and ointments smeared all over the body, as well as the fabled ‘Karkidaka Kanji.’
But, Karkidakam is a lot more than these aspects. There are a few other things that are all the more vital in maintaining the mental and physical vivacity.
The first thing you need to do is to revise your diet according to the directives of Ayurveda. Climatic changes can congeal ‘Vatas’ (the airy elements) and ‘Pittas’ (biles). Hence, it is advisable to opt for a healthy diet over a tasty diet during this season.
Dietary moderation for a healthy life
Dietary moderation is imperative of ‘Karkidakam.’ Eat and drink only when you are really hungry or thirsty. During these days, your digestive system will be weak. Hence you must choose foodstuffs that are easily digestible, and should abstain from heavy intakes. It is fine to include veg / non-veg soups as starters.
‘Karkidaka Kanji’ is an integral part of the 'Karkidakam' lifestyle. Ingredients like ‘Dashamoolam and Dashapushpam can ease ‘Vatadoshas’, while ‘Navayari’ the chief ingredient of ‘Karkidaka Kanji,’ will enhance muscular strength and immunity.
Eat ‘kanji’ (gruel) along with some salted and boiled ‘Pazhamuthira’ (horse gram). Leafy vegetables can also be a good supplement. But, consumption of hot and sour items must be restricted by all means. Also stay away from excessively sweet, salty or bitter foodstuffs. Never drink cold water. You may consume boiled water mixed with dry ginger instead. This will help you maintain your physical vitality.
Panchakarma – feel rejuvenated
‘Karkidakam’ season is the best time for ayurvedic treatments like Vamanam, Virechanam, Nasyam, Kashayavasti and Thailavasti. Treatments are to be done under the supervision of an ayurveda expert, who would prescribe treatments according to your physical condition.
‘Vatadoshsa’ can be curbed by applying ‘Danvanthram and Pindathailam’ (ayurvedic medicinal ointments) all over your body and bathing in moderately warm water. Administering ‘Nasyam’ (medicinal application through nostrils) using ‘Anuthailam’ and ‘ksheerabala’ is idea for a healthy trachea and throat. Apply ‘Rasnadi choornam’ on your pate to keep common cold at bay.
