C. Babitha and Abitha Mary Manuel bagged a golden double for Kerala. Babitha reigned supreme in 1,500m and 3,000m events, while Abitha cornered glory in 400m and 800m with records.

The meet in Pune was the first ever championship after the event was split into three – sub-junior, junior and senior – so that the school games could be be held more conveniently. Kerala had won the overall championship for the past 19 years.
