Pune: Favorites Kerala emerged champions in the inaugural national senior school athletics championships here on Saturday.
Kerala garnered 112 points to clinch the overall title, while hosts Maharshtra came a distant second ahead of Tamil Nadu on the basis of having won more gold medals.

Kerala bagged 11 gold, 12 silver and seven bronze medals.
C. Babitha and Abitha Mary Manuel bagged a golden double for Kerala. Babitha reigned supreme in 1,500m and 3,000m events, while Abitha cornered glory in 400m and 800m with records.
The meet in Pune was the first ever championship after the event was split into three – sub-junior, junior and senior – so that the school games could be be held more conveniently. Kerala had won the overall championship for the past 19 years.
