Rohtak (Haryana): Athletes belonging to Kerala came under an unprovoked attack from members of the home team at the ongoing National School Athletics Meet here. A Haryana athlete who won gold in pole vault led the assault.
On Thursday, the Kerala team had emerged on top in the points table, pushing the hosts to second place. Discontent over this among Haryana athletes allegedly led to the violence unleashed on the Kerala team. Kerala has registered a complaint regarding the issue and sought the disqualification of the Haryana athletes involved in the incident.
The meet is witnessing a neck and neck race between Kerala and Haryana. On Thursday, Kerala, with 64 points, was ahead of the host team, which had 53. Kerala won seven medals, including three golds, on the day. Among the notable victories was the gold secured for the first time in discus throw. It was Alexes P. Thankachan who brought glory to Kerala in the event.
Among other medal winners for Kerala on Day Four of the event are, Anumol Thampy (silver) and K R Athira (Bronze) in 3,000 m (girls); Ananthu Vijayan (silver) in 400 m hurdles (boys); Vishnu Priya (gold) in 400 m hurdles (girls); Aiswarya P R (gold) in triple jump (girls) and Anas (silver) in triple jump (boys).
