Kochi: Over 6,000 people have registered so far to take part in the Spice Coast Marathon, jointly organized by Cochin Corporation, Souls of Kochi, and Malayala Manorama, on Sunday.
Cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar will flag off the mega event at the Port Trust Ground in Wellington Island. The races will be held in three categories: A full marathon with a distance of 42.2 km, half-marathon of 21.1 km and a family marathon of 8 km.
The full marathon will kickstart at 4 am while the half-marathon and family run will begin at 5 am and 7 am respectively.
Sachin will arrive in Kochi on Saturday afternoon, the organizers said.
The official T-Shirt and medals to be awarded to the finishers and the route map will be unveiled at a function to be held at the Municipal Council Hall in Kochi at 3.30 pm on Friday.
Around 2,000 racers from India and abroad have registered to take part in the half-marathon, while the full marathon will have around 500 participants. Spot registration facilities will be arranged at the Marathon Expo at the Regional Sports Center in Kadavanthra between 9 am and 6 pm on Saturday.
Spot registration will be limited to 70 persons in full marathon, 200 in half-marathon, and 500 in family marathon.
The participants can collect the sports kit containing an electronic race timing bib and T-shirt at the expo. There will be no kit distribution on the day of the event, the organizers informed.
Only registered members will be allowed to participate in the marathon. They are requested to report at the starting point at least half-an-hour before beginning of the race.
Sachin will be present at the three starting points to flag off the run. He will also be the chief guest at the prize distribution ceremony to be held at 8.30 pm.
The top three winners in the three categories will be awarded special prizes while all the participants, who complete the race, will get a finisher medal.
Freedom trophies instituted by the Kochi Corporation as part of its golden jubilee will be given away to the top three finishers from the Kerala Police and Indian Navy in the half-marathon.
The event aims at spreading awareness among the public on the Corporation’s ongoing drive against plastic waste.
IDBI Federal Life Insurance is the main sponsors of the event, to be held in partnership with the Kochi Metro Rail Limited and the District Tourism Promotion Council.
