Kochi: Seeded players, including many yesteryear stars from Kerala, had it easy in the opening rounds of the World Senior Badminton Championships at the Rajeev Gandhi Indoor Stadium, Kadavanthra, on Tuesday.
In the men’s singles (45+), Malayalee shuttlers Jaison Xavier and Philip Bency Chirakkaparambil booked a berth in the pre-quarterfinals with convincing wins over their French opponents in the second round. While Jaison defeated Sebastian Grad 21-4, 21-8, Philip Bency quelled the challenge of Michel Chanteur 21-11, 21-7.
In the men’s doubles (45+), Malayalee duo Jomon George and Ravi Prasad sailed into the pre-quarterfinals.
In the women’s singles (55+), Pune-based Malayalee shuttler Prathibha Nair made it to the last 16 stage.
Indian players who entered the pre-quarterfinals are: Swati Tarun Chauhan (women's singles 35+), Anamika Durgpurohit and Nancy Tandon (women's singles 40+), Sanjeevani Mahajan, and Shalini Yadav (women's singles 45+), Sangeeta Rajagopalan (women's singles 50+), Vijay Sharma (men's singles 45+), Jayant Dewangan, Murali Subramaniam, and Lalthanzuala (men's singles 50+), Ashok Raman, Harjit Singh, and Basant Kumar Soni (men's singles 55+), Hubert Miranda, Satish Gupta, and Prakash Samadhanam, (men's singles 65+), and Vidya Bhushan Arora, Dhanram Konde, and Aravind Mehta (men's singles 70+).
In the men’s doubles (45+) category, Mitesh Mehta-Rajeev Sharma, and Srikant Bakshi-Navdeep Singh also made it to the last 16 stage.
In the men’s singles (70+) category, Malayalee shuttler Venugopal Menon, who represents Malaysia, scraped past Norway’s Daniel Ask (14-21, 21-13, 21-19) in the second round.
Keralites Joy T. Antony (second seed) will take on Belgium’s Jules van den Brand while K. A. Aneesh will lock horns with Norway’s Morten Aarhus in the men’s singles (40+) pre-quarterfinals on Wednesday.
