Thiruvananthapuram: In a boost for the marginalized communities, the first-ever athletics meet for transgenders was organized by the Kerala government at the Central Stadium here on Friday. As many as 132 transgenders took part in the competition which featured events such as sprint, relay, shot put and long jump.
Chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan, sports and youth affairs minister A.C. Moideen, and tourism minister Kadakampally Surendran were part of the organizing committee.

Each district sports council had appointed a coach and allotted a ground for the participants to train for three days before the competition.
The Kerala State Sports Council also organized workshops for coaches and sports authorities. The coaches were invited to Thiruvananthapuram and discussions were held on the issues faced by the marginalized community that stopped them from participating in sports competitions.
