Surat: Kerala took the honors on a rain-curtailed opening day in their Ranji Trophy quarterfinal clash against Vidarbha here on Thursday.

Kerala, playing their maiden quarterfinals, reduced Vidarbha to 45/3 after their rivals opted to bat on winning the toss.

The big three in the Vidarbha batting line-up - captain Faiz Fazal, his opening partner Sanjay Ramaswamy and Wassim Jaffer - were back in the hut as Kerala made them pay for taking first strike on a pitch with a fair amount of moisture.

Fazal (2) was the first to go as he perished to medium-pacer M D Nidheesh. The left-hander was snapped up by K A Arun Karthick with only nine on the board.

Left-arm spinner K C Akshay, who replaced  medium-pacer Vinod Kumar in the playing eleven, struck twin blows. The rookie first dismissed Jaffer (12) and then packed off Ramaswamy (17) towards the close of play.

Ganesh Satish (7) and Karn Sharma (7) were at the crease as only 24 overs of play were possible on the first day of the five-day game.

Brief scores: Vidarbha 45/3 in 24 overs (K C Akshay 2/14) vs Kerala
