Thiruvananthapuram: Debutant left-arm Spinner K.C. Akshay picked up five wickets as Kerala thrashed Jammu and Kashmir by 158 runs in their Ranji Trophy Group B game here on Saturday.
The win propelled Kerala to 18 points from four games and boosted their hopes of a quarterfinal berth. Kerala are in second spot behind Gujarat. Only the top two sides will qualify for the quarterfinals from the seven-team group.
Jammu and Kashmir, resuming on 56/7, were bowled out for 79 inside the first hour on the final day.
Akshay took all the three wickets to register his maiden five-for (5/21) in first class cricket. The youngster returned dream match figures of 9/58.
The trio of Kerala spinners Akshay, Sijomon Joseph and Jalaj Saxena accounted for 17 wickets in the match.
Sanju Samson, who hit a brilliant 112 in the Kerala first innings, was declared man of the match.
Kerala next play Saurashtra at Thiruvananthapuram from November 17. Kerala have won all three of their games at Thiruvananthapuram while suffering a defeat at the hands of defending champions Gujarat in the lone away match.
