Saudi Arabia made history by giving citizenship to a robot, Sophia. During a business event in Riyadh, the humanoid robot became the first-of-its kind to be granted citizenship in a country.
The move is aimed at projecting the country as one which promotes technology, said reports.
When panel moderator and business writer Andrew Ross Sorkin announced the decision, Sophia thanked the country and said, “It is historic to be the first robot in the world to be recognized with citizenship.”
Sophia, developed by Hanson Robotics, reportedly once said that it would 'destroy humans.' But this time it spoke positively about living in harmony with humans and dismissed concerns on the rise of artificial intelligence.
“You’ve been reading too much Elon Musk and watching too many Hollywood movies,” said Sophia.
