CUSAT aims for ‘center of excellence’ tag with Rs 1,500cr plan
Kalamassery (Kochi): The Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) has submitted a Rs 1,500 crore plan to the union human resources department to turn it into a center of excellence, vice chancellor Dr J Latha said. She said that the plan was intended to elevate the university to global standards.
The university tops the list of 10 academic institutions being considered for the tag by the union ministry. The University of Kerala is the other institution in the state on the list. The university will receive Rs 1,000 crore for its development if it is selected for development as a center of excellence. Read more
Kerala to use robots to clean sewers, end manual scavenging
Thiruvananthapuram: Robots will soon replace men in cleaning up sewer holes in Kerala, ending the age-old practice of manual scavenging in the southern state.
'Bandicoot', the robot developed by the startup firm Genrobotics, will be used for cleaning sewer holes.
The Kerala Water Authority (KWA) and Kerala Startup Mission (KSUM) on Thursday signed an MoU for transfer of technology and products, including use of the robots for the purpose. Read more
Cyclone Ockhi aid: Kerala to form monitoring committee
Thiruvananthapuram: In an effort to ensure disbursal of financial assistance to families of Ockhi victims in a time bound manner, the Kerala government on Thursday decided to constitute a monitoring committee. The decision in this regard was taken at the cabinet meeting chaired by chief minister, Pinarayi Vijayan.
Revenue, Finance, Fisheries, Local Self Government and Agriculture secretaries will be members of the committee headed by the chief secretary, a government press release said. Read more
Kerala govt allows prisoners to donate organs to close relatives
Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala government on Thursday decided to permit prisoners in state jails to donate their organs to close relatives, but with certain conditions.

Kozhikode railway station cleanest in the country, says Survey
New Delhi: The Kozhikode railway station in Kerala was ranked the best by travelers while the Hazrat Nizamuddin here was given the lowest ratings in terms of cleanliness, a survey by a app-based travel portal said.
It also found that around 40 per cent stations, found cleanest by users, were in the south followed by 20 per cent in central India and the same in the west. Read more
WhatsApp groups can be infiltrated, says researchers
New Delhi: After German cryptographers reported flaws that make it possible to infiltrate WhatsApp's private group chats without admin permission, the Facebook-owned messaging platform said Thursday its end-to-end encryption is impeccable and its over one billion users are at no data breach risk.
According to a report in Wired.com, cryptographers from Ruhr University Bochum in Germany told a gathering at the "Real World Crypto Security Conference" in Zurich on Wednesday that "anyone who controls the app's servers could insert new people into private group chats without needing admin permission. Jet Airways prohibits smart luggage on flights from Jan 15
Mumbai: Following a direction from the global airline grouping IATA, Jet Airways on Thursday said it will prohibit passengers from carrying smart luggage, which include devices with non-removable batteries, on its aircraft from January 15.
As per IATA, smart bags/smart luggage include devices with integrated lithium batteries, motors, power banks, GPS, GSM, Bluetooth, RFID or Wi-Fi technology. Bags with a lithium battery will only be accepted if it is possible to remove the battery. Read more

New York: Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos is now the world's richest man, not just at present, but of all time.
Both Bloomberg and Forbes have put Bezos on top of their billionaire lists. Bloomberg said Bezos' net worth reached $106 billion while Forbes put it at $105 billion as of Wednesday, Xinhua news agency reported.
The previous record was held by Microsoft founder Bill Gates with $100 billion in 1999. Read more
Key Apple investors seek fix for phone addiction of youth
New York: Apple Inc shareholders Jana Partners and the California State Teachers' Retirement System are urging the smartphone maker to take steps to address what they say is a growing problem of young people getting addicted to Apple's iPhones, Jana partner Charles Penner said.
Jana, a leading activist shareholder, and CalSTRS, one of the nation's largest public pension plans, delivered a letter to Apple on Saturday asking the company to consider developing software to let parents limit children's phone use, the Wall Street Journal reported earlier on Sunday. Read more
