Spelling test for a new school?
Getting your spellings correct is an important part of learning. Now listen to this story. Kerala finance minister T.M. Thomas Isaac, who was a professor at the Centre for Development Studies before he took the plunge into active politics, donned the hat of a teacher once again on Monday. Conceding the request of a Class VII student of Sree Chitra Maharaja Vilasam Government UP School in Poomkavu, Alappuzha, to conduct dictation to test their proficiency level in Malayalam, the minister made a surprise visit to the school on Monday afternoon.
The students did not disappoint him as most of them performed well in the test. As a reward, the minister announced a new two-storey building and high-tech learning facilities at the school. Now, your school may not need new buildings, but still it is very important to get your spellings and grammar correct. Read more
Thiruvananthapuram ready for India-New Zealand T20
Kerala Cricket Association (KCA) secretary Jayesh George is confident there will be a 45,000-capacity crowd at the new Greenfield Stadium on November 7 when India clash with New Zealand in a Twenty20 International match. The last time Thiruvananthapuram hosted an international was when the Vivian Richards-led West Indies played the last of the seven ODI matches against India on January 25, 1988 at the University Stadium. The Caribbean side smashed the Indian side led by Ravi Shastri by nine wickets. Read more
President gives away Vayoshreshtha Samman
President Ram Nath Kovind on Monday presented the 'Vayoshreshtha Samman' to senior citizens and institutions working for the welfare of the elderly at an event organized by the ministry of social justice and empowerment. Kerala state received the award for best implementation of "maintenance and welfare of parents and senior citizens act". Presenting the honors, the president said that there is a healthy tradition of respecting and taking care of the elders in our country. Read more
Mental health leaves
Today is World Mental Health Day. It is observed with the overall objective of raising awareness of mental health issues and mobilizing efforts in support of better mental health. This year, the theme is mental health in the workplace. A Bengaluru based healthcare firm DocsApp announced the introduction of mental health care as part of the sick leaves given to the employees. "We automatically associate 'sick leave' with someone being physically ill. However, we never associate a person being sick to a mental health issue," CEO Satish Kannan said in the statement.
"Lack of awareness about mental health issues has hindered people from seeking help from a specialist. We need to educate people and ensure they understand that mental health issues have to be treated, and a specialist has to be consulted for a treatment," he added. Read more
