Angela Merkel wins a fourth term
Chancellor Angela Merkel clinched a historic fourth term in Germany's election on Sunday. However, her victory was clouded by the hard-Right AfD party winning its first seats in parliament. Merkel, who after 12 years in power held a double-digit lead for most of the campaign, scored around 33 percent of the vote with her conservative Christian Union (CDU/CSU) bloc, according to exit polls.
PV Sindhu nominated for Padma Bhushan
Olympic silver medalist shuttler P. V. Sindhu has been recommended for the prestigious Padma Bhushan, country's third highest civilian award, by the Sports Ministry here. A two-time bronze medalist at World Championship, Sindhu has been simply unstoppable ever since becoming the first Indian to win a silver at Rio Games last year.
Team Europe wins
Roger Federer won the inaugural Laver Cup for Team Europe on Sunday. The team beat back a fierce challenge from players from the rest of the world to claim the trophy in a dramatic final match over the weekend. Federer delivered in a tight 4-6 7-6(6) 11-9 win over world number 20 Nick Kyrgios, with the Australian pushing to the final point as he sought a win that would have forced overtime doubles match to decide the tournament.
Eman Ahmed dies in Abu Dhabi
Egyptian national Eman Ahmed Abdelaty, once known as the world's heaviest woman, passed away in Abu Dabhi here on Monday. Eman was admitted to the Abu Dhabi hospital in May and was under the supervision of over 20 doctors from different specialties, who were managing her medical condition from the time she arrived in the United Arab Emirates. She was earlier treated at a hospital in Mumbai where she managed to shed more than 300 kgs.
