Kottiyoor: Days after the arrest of Fr Robin Vadakkumcherry over alleged rape of a 16-year-old girl in Kannur, Diocese of Mananthavady tendered an apology to the family of the victim and to the public.
"I endure your pain and agony and I'm also in pain. We are destined to spend this fasting time of the year this way," Mananthavady Bishop Mar Jose Porunnedom said in a letter.
"The loss of self respect and spiritual damage caused to the church by this incident is huge. I don't know how to pacify the child's parents and relatives. I too join in their tears. I can only apologise to you," the letter said.
Earlier, Mananthavady bishop had removed Fr Vadakkumcherry from the office of the vicar of the parish as per the Canon law.
After the incident, Robin Vadakkumcherry was taken into custody when he was reportedly getting ready to slip out of the country. The minor had delivered a baby at a private hospital the other day.
The Kerala police have named eight people, including five nuns, as accused in the rape case. They were charged with non-bailable offenses under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act for trying to cover up the rape of the 16-year-old girl.
The probe team has also filed a case against the management of Christuraj Hospital, Koothuparamba, where the girl delivered the baby.
The police are likely to arrest the hospital officials.
