Mishel death probe leads to Cronin’s place in Chhattisgarh

Kochi: The Crime Branch team investigating the unnatural death of Mishel Shaji in Kochi will accompany her estranged boyfriend to his place where he stayed in Chhattisgarh. Cronin Alexander Baby repeated his claim that their relation was rocked by some misunderstanding and there was nothing that he knew of to prompt the aspiring chartered accountant to commit suicide.

The investigating officers want to check if Cronin used another phone or SIM to communicate with Mishel from Chhattisgarh. They will also be looking for any storage device for any photographs or video clips of Mishel when they sift through the place where Cronin stayed in Chhattisgarh, sources said. Cronin was working in Chattisgarh.

Cronin has been taken into custody on the charge of abetting Mishel’s suicide. The 18-year-old girl went missing from her hostel in Kochi on March 5. She was found dead in the Kochi Lake the next day.

The local police initially said the girl had committed suicide but the government handed over the probe to the Crime Branch after the mourning family said they were not convinced that it was a suicide.

The Crime Branch team, meanwhile, came across more footage of Mishel from the day she went missing. Footage from seven surveillance cameras around a church at Kaloor could throw more light into the last moments of the girl.

Mishel is seen coming out of the church around 6:15 pm. She initially turned left but came back in a jiffy within two minutes and proceeded towards the opposite side. She is also seen opening and closing her bag, as if she was putting something in.

The team has to find if she was fleeing an unexpected encounter.

The police and the Crime Branch have made no effort to trace the phone used by Mishel in her last days. She was holding the phone in her right hand and the bag in her left hand in the footage collected from the surveillance camera from an apartment near the High Court.

The phone could hold invaluable clues about the mystery but the device may be lost forever if it is in the lake.
