Kochi: The Kerala police team probing the death of Chartered Accountancy student Mishel Shaji has got footage from seven CCTV cameras that give a more clear picture of her last hours. The girl went missing on March 5 and her body was found near the Ernakulam wharf the next day.
Based on the CCTV footage, police infer that the 18-year-old had reached a church in Kaloor by 5.45 pm on March 5. She is believed to have left the church by 6.12 pm.
After leaving the church, she is first seen walking towards the left side of the road and then seen hurriedly returning. The footage also shows her opening and closing a bag, prompting the police to suspect that she bought something from a nearby shop. However, relatives have pointed out that she could have been frightened at the sight of someone and returned.
Another footage accessed from a CCTV camera placed in front of a fruit shop shows the girl walking towards the Goshree bridge from the High Court junction. However, as the girl had covered her head with her duppatta, her face could not be clearly seen in the video. But the police have confirmed that attire of the girl was same as the one worn by Mishel, when she went missing.
Mishel's family has 3 questions: can the police answer?
Why did Cronin send 12 SMSes to Mishel after her death?
Earlier in the day, the police had found another CCTV footage of Mishel. The CCTV in front of the Ashoka flat complex too had captured the images of Mishel, hours before her death.
These images from seven CCTV cameras that back the police theory that the girl had committed suicide by jumping off the Goshree bridge in Kochi.
The police suspect that girl had committed suicide due to the mental trauma caused by a youth, who had been in a relationship with her. Cronin Alexander Baby, a relative of the girl, was arrested by the police and was booked for abetment to suicide.
The youth, a Piravom native, was in a relationship with the girl for nearly two years, the police said. Their relationship was going through a rough patch and the youth, who worked in Chhattisgarh, had been continuously trying to contact Mishel before she went missing.
