Varkala: A migrant worker from Uttar Pradesh has been arrested for attacking a college girl with a hammer and causing head injuries.
Mohammed Makharam hit 20-year-old Dhanya of Vettor on the head, while she was on her way to the college. She was admitted to the taluk hospital and her condition is said to be stable.
It was not known why the migrant worker, who has been charged with attempt to murder, attacked the young girl.
Dhanya, a first year BA student at the St Xavier's College in Thumba, had left her home for college Wednesday morning. She had walked a few meters along the Mangad-Puthenchira road, when the 28-year-old accused passed her. Without any provocation, he turned and hit her on the head with the hammer thrice.
Shocked and frightened at the unexpected attack, the young girl ran home, crying out. Her cries alerted the passersby, who blocked the assailant and handed him over to the police.
The police are trying to ascertain whether Makharam, who hails from Shaharpur in Uttar Pradesh, is a drug addict. The youth, who works in a timber mill, used to live with his family near Puthenchantha, but had sent the family back to his home state recently.
Makharam does not have a police clearance certificate which is mandatory for workers from other states.
