Pariyaram: A middle-aged man's concern for a pregnant woman in a bus was not shared by his co-passengers, eventually landing him in an intensive care unit. P V Rajan, 50, of Kadalayi, is battling for his life at Pariyaram medical college hospital after trying to be a good Samaritan.
The incident happened on Tuesday evening near Kannur stadium. Rajan, a daily wager, and his wife Savitha were returning home to Kadalayi and had boarded a private bus plying to Kannur general hospital from the Varam bus stop. When the bus reached Taluk stop, a pregnant woman got in. Rajan asked two girls, to vacate their seats for her, which sparked the trouble. Rajan’s wife was sitting in the front. She said that a man on one of the back seats and two others questioned Rajan over his demand and started manhandling him.
Though Rajan and Savitha had tickets to travel up to Plaza junction, Savitha suggested that they get down at stadium corner. When they were alighting, the men pushed Rajan out of the vehicle and he fell on the road. The attackers too got down and started beating Rajan again. When the men pushed him, Rajan's head hit the concrete slab of the footpath and collapsed.
Rajan, who lost consciousness, was rushed to Kannur Madhava Rao Scindia Hospital in an auto-rickshaw by some passersby. He was then shifted to AKG Hospital and again to Koyili Hospital. At Koyili Hospital, a CT Scan revealed that he had clots in his brain and Rajan was referred to Pariyaram, where he was admitted to the Neurology ICU.
The incident comes barely a month after a pregnant woman, who was forced to remain standing in a moving bus in Kottayam, fell and died.
