Alappuzha: A case has been registered against senior civil police officer Nelson Thomas for sexually abusing a minor girl. The police have commenced an investigation on the basis of the girl's testimony that more officials were involved.
District police chief S Surendran said that Nelson has been suspended but had gone into hiding ever since Athira (24), a native of Punnapra and an accomplice in the case, had been arrested last Wednesday. Athira was a familiar face to the girl and had allegedly played a key role in taking the girl to various hotels and resorts at night. The girl claims that Athira was the go-between who brought her to Nelson, who was then working with the Narcotics cell of the state police. It was the locals in the area who had stopped and questioned Athira's motives, leading to her capture.
Narcotics DYSP Naseem confirmed that Nelson had been transferred from the cell to the Kainadi police station on December 4, 2017. Indications are that along with Nelson, at least three other police officers, including a DYSP and a circle inspector are also involved in the crime.
The girl is however unable to discern the places where she had been taken to. Still, her testimony contains enough clues to nab the people. Reports claim that the girl has already given the names of various police officers who had abused her to the investigation agencies.
The girl, perhaps was an easy pray, as her mother reportedly suffers from psychological issues while her dad is differently abled. The only other person at her house is her grandmother.
Meanwhile, Alappuzha district DYSP P V Baby said that the police were taking strenuous action on the basis of the girl's statements.
